"THE PERFECTION OF ABRAHAM'S FAITH"
Genesis 22:3-14


I. THE CHARACTER OF TRUE FAITH (3-8)

A. It Is Always Punctual (3)
"And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him."

B. It Is Always Persistent (4)
"Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off."

C. It Is Always Personal (5a)
"And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship,.."

D. It Is Always Positive (5b) "...and come again to you."

E. It Is Always Prophetic (6-8)

1. He Pictures The Pain Of The Savior (6-7)
a. His Great Burden On Golgotha (6)
"And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together."

b. His Grevious Battle In Gethsemane (7)
"And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?"

"And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife..."

2. By His Revealed Attitude (10b) "...to slay his son."

III. THE CONFIRMATION OF TRUE FAITH (11-12)

A. It Is Always Attentive To The Call Of God (11)
"And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I."

B. It Is Always Assured By The Commands Of God (12a)

"And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him:" C. It Is Always Authenticated By The Criterion Of God (12b)
"...for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me."

D. It Is Always Appropriating The Choice Of God (13-14)

1. A Revelation Of The Sacrifice (13)
a. The Ram Was God's Appointed Sacrifice (13a)
"And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns:"

b. The Ram Was A Gratefuly Appropriated Substitute (13b)
"...and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son."

2. A Recognition Of The Sovereign (14)

a. The Memorial Name (14a) "And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh:"
